Yeaaa! MTV Canceled Skins

I was so hoping that MTV's show "Skins" would be canceled. My thoughts on the show are expressed here in an excerpt from a TV Review that I had written in the Valley Patriot February 2011...

"I’d like to begin this month’s column by briefly stating my disgust for MTV’s “Skins” and support of the Parents Television Council to have this show immediately removed from the air. Without going into all the gory, graphic and highly inappropriate details, I will say that this show offers nothing of any value to its viewers whether young or old. MTV claims it is not intended for young audiences, yet the cast and content are all about the misguided teen generation. If tweens or teens are watching “Skins,” they are getting nothing but bad ideas from it. If adults are watching, they shouldn’t be."

I was happy to see today that indeed somebody showed a modicum of sense and common decency. See here as reported on FoxNews.com,

Real Housewives=Really Pathetic

I am the first to admit that I am a huge fan of Bravo's "Real Housewives" franchise, but this season of the O.C. Housewives has truly enlightened me to the downfalls of D-list stardom.

These, the original, housewives have seemingly jumped right off the deep end. They are entirely ridiculous and quite frankly boring to watch. Here is the breakdown:

Vicki - the last remaining housewife from the original cast has aged horribly and is just so painfully annoying that I want to tear my hair out when she flashes on the screen. She is a perfect example of someone whose 15 minutes of fame is well past its done point. She and her self-absorbed ways do not belong in any kind of spotlight.

Tamra - OMG - What did you do to your face? She is so over-botoxed, she can barely move her mouth. And boy is she obnoxious. Also, she and her new young boyfriend are gross.

Gretchen - Speaking of gross. Gretchen and Slade - I do not think I need to say any more. Yuck!

Alexis - Here is a woman who has potential to be a decent character and then she has to go and preach her faith in every sentence which just drips of hypocrisy every time I look at her lavish ways and plastic body. Not to mention her bizarre 1950's husband who, by most women's standards, would be considered a real jerk! Just because he pays for everything doesn't make him a good husband.

Peggy - The newest addition to the crew is, well, bonkers. I haven't quite figured her out yet, but I've yet to see her add any real interest to the show.

Overall, it appears that the "Real Housewives of O.C." should practice the FIFO (first in -first out) method and make a quick escape before they embarrass themselves any further. There are at least 6 other housewives groups waiting in the wings to take over. It will certainly not be a loss.

Grey's Anatomy Musical?

What is the deal with Grey's Anatomy's lame attempt to boost ratings by introducing a musical episode? Are they serious? I already knew this show had gone downhill but this certainly confirms it. If they are trying to jump on the Glee bandwagon, they should cut their losses and jump right off. This is a perfect example of a show having aired past its prime and pathetically trying to stay current. If this sad musical event doesn't force this show into cancellation, I do not know what will.

I long for the days of Izzy, Burke and George, but alas we are left with singing doctors. It is embarrassing really. And I don't like the feeling of embarrassment, therefore I will save myself the agony and not watch!. Sad - So very Sad.

A New Year a New line-up - I hope!

I’ve recently become so disenchanted with television. Yes, the holiday season has been outrageously busy not affording me the usual time I can dedicate to my long-time vice, but honestly there is so little that holds my interest. Shows that started out well have gone downhill as producers and writers try to push the envelope in order to outdo their former seasons of success. Take for example, “Brothers and Sisters;” this show had an interesting premise at the start and now, after a few seasons, has turned into a ridiculous mish mash of family hysteria, arguments and unrealistic drama that has turned me entirely off.

Do I dare say that “Glee” has suffered the same fate? What the heck happened to the underdog gleeks trying to pull themselves out of obscurity into the mainstream world of high school normalcy? Suddenly we are left with bored cheerleaders kissing and groping one another to pass the time and the once captivating singing of breakout star Lea Michele (Rachel) is now a painful push of vocals heard, most often, through a puddle of tears and strained expression. Don’t get me started on the racy photo shoot that Michele and Dianna Agron (Quinn) took part in for GQ. Why in the world was that necessary?

The good news is that there are several shows set to air in the coming months that look rather compelling.

To start; previews for “Off the Map” airing on ABC, January 12 at 10 p.m. look quite intriguing. Six doctors travel to South America to work in an understaffed medical clinic. Together they reacquaint themselves with their desire to be in the medical field all the while experiencing new friendships, relationships and the amazing tropical backdrop of mountains, oceans and jungles. Looks to me like a nice mix of the heyday of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Lost.”

Another upcoming show that deviates from my usual type is “Lights Out” set to air January 11 at 10 p.m. on the FX Network. Recent coverage of box office hit “The Fighter” starring Mark Wahlberg has led to a bit of a fascination with the sport of boxing which will be the focus of “Lights Out.” I am excited to give this boxing/family drama a shot in an effort to mix up my typical line-up.

Next on my list is “Mr. Sunshine” starring Matthew Perry premiering in February on ABC -date and time to be announced. Perry’s character, Ben, is turning 40 and sets off on a path to re-evaluate his life. Love it and love Matthew Perry! At the risk of setting expectations too high – I am really looking forward to this one.

There are more new shows on the horizon as well and I look forward to exploring my options in 2011.

Millionaire Matchmaker

Okay, I am going to let you in on one of my guilty pleasures. It is Bravo TV’s, “The Millionaire Matchmaker.” I don’t know what it is about Bravo TV, but they seem to air show after show that suck me in despite my strongest attempts to resist. Of course, whenever these shows are in their current season, Bravo finds a way to air them constantly so it is practically impossible not to catch a glimpse.

“The Millionaire Matchmaker,” is a show that follows dating service extraordinaire, Patti Stanger. Patti is an outspoken New Jersey native who, for the past 3 seasons, has run her matchmaking business out of sunny and superficial Los Angeles, CA. However in this, her 4^th season, Patti has relocated to New York City and is struggling to figure out the many differences between east coast and west coast love hopefuls.

While Patti’s clientele may consist of millionaires, most of them are completely clueless in the art of dating and love. They are often pathetic or completely self-absorbed and obnoxious. There is obviously a reason they have yet to find love and have decided to put their desperate search on television for the world to see.

Patti truly steals the show in every episode as she is brutally honest in her observations and direction. While she is often crude, I have to admit that I find her candor refreshing. She says what everyone else in the room is thinking and I can’t help but think it would be so many people’s dream, including my own, to say whatever comes to mind.

As with most reality shows, the clever editing and scene cutting only adds to the fun factor. The way they splice and place certain dialogue and reactions is both ridiculous and hysterical. I find it rather obvious, but what the heck, these people are already making fools of themselves so why shouldn’t the producers take the liberty of moving things around to add even further to the absurdity and humiliation.

There is of course a price to pay when choosing to indulge in some of reality television’s most questionable options. I am pretty sure that with every minute I watch Patti attempt to pair up her millionaire’s and companions I am losing brain cells by the plenty. That said, I get the biggest kick out of this show and the sheer audacity of those people willing to put themselves out there in the most awkward and uncomfortable fashion.

Giuliana & Bill

I had discovered "Giuliana & Bill" on the Style Network last season and have fallen in love with them. They are so sweet and they put their most sensitive issues out there for the audience to feel with them (recent miscarriage). What I love about them is that they seem so real despite Giuliana being a top E! Television reporter and Bill's real estate success dating back to his stint on Trump's "The Apprentice." They are clearly in love and they seem comfortingly normal. No excessive partying, drinking, drugs and sex. Just real, everyday couple's banter that is typical yet entirely entertaining. They have a funny way about them that makes them easy to relate to, yet their jet-setting lifestyle is far-reaching enough to make them Hollywood-esque and perfectly watchable.

Manscaping Overload

I am sitting at my computer blogging away while watching "Extra" with Mario Lopez. What the heck! He looks like a girl. He is entirely over-groomed, his waist looks as tiny as a woman's, his body is hairless and I am certain that he is wearing leggings. I am all for a little man-scaping to clean up some errant hair, but Mario's look just isn't sexy. Give me a little 5:00 shadow, some mussed up hair and a classic pair of Levi's and I am more than happy. The pretty boy look has got to go. I am not sure if Mario was worse in his cheesy "Saved by the Bell" days or now.

Fall TV so far...

In my recent TV Review Column with The Valley Patriot Newspaper, I ran the following breakdown. I thought I would share it here:

Dancing with the Stars, ABC Mon 8:00– So over it. Sorry, but much like “American Idol” there is only so much I can take.

The Event, NBC Mon 9:00– I wasn’t a big fan despite all the hype. There were too many killings, flashbacks, twists and turns and that was just episode 1. It looks like they are trying to be another “Lost” with unanswered questions and unclear story lines. No thanks!

Chase, NBC Mon 10:00– Not bad. I am typically not a crime show watcher, but I am committed to watching some new show styles this season. I actually stayed awake through the whole thing, but really do take issue with all of the crime and negativity. I honestly watch television to be entertained, not freaked out.

Glee, Fox Tues 8:00– Excellent! Loved the new character opposite Sue Sylvester and the music is spectacular. I am looking forward to another great season.

Raising Hope, Fox Tues, 9:00 – Unbearable to the point of disgusting. Smoking, vomiting and Cloris Leachman in her undergarments -enough said.

Running Wilde, Fox Tues 9:30 – This show was a little odd but I believe it has promise. I like Will Arnett and have liked Keri Russell since her “Felicity” days. It may not have the strength to last, but I would watch again.

Better With You, ABC Wed 8:30– Cute. I like the polar opposite sister dynamic and the Mom, played by Debra Jo Rupp of “That 70’s Show,” is a likable supporting character. It fits well in the Wednesday line-up just before “Modern Family” and “Cougar Town.” Speaking of which…

Modern Family, ABC Wed 9:00 – Well worth their 6 Emmy’s! Keep it going – Best show on television.

Cougar Town, ABC Wed 9:30– So silly, but still liking it. I like that both Lisa Kudrow and now Jennifer Aniston have guest starred. Now we just need Joey, Ross and Chandler.

Hellcats, CW Wed 9:00 – This storyline is a little young for me, but I would imagine it is a big teen/tween sensation. It generally seems interesting and should successfully reach the younger market.

Grey’s Anatomy, ABC Thurs 9:00 – Looks like more of the same, but I am okay with that. The show has lost its pizzazz but is reliable in terms of typical hospital room drama.

So much more to see - so little time.

Raising Hope - Hopeless

You would think that a new show following the ever popular “Glee” would have a decent chance at success, however, I cannot believe that will be the case with the train wreck which was Fox Network’s latest, “Raising Hope.” Quite frankly, the entire premise of the show was sick. A young man has a one night stand with a woman who happens to be a serial killer and then later ends up bearing his child while in jail. If that is not bad enough, the woman is then given the death penalty which is disgustingly observed by the baby daddy and baby. You would think this a dark crime show, but no, it is an off-color comedy that truly speaks to the sad state of humanity if this is the type of show we would ever watch. Everything from the constant on screen smoking and vomit to Cloris Leachman exposed in her undergarments was unbearable.

I have committed myself to watching shows that I would normally not tune into this season, but this is just more than I can possibly handle.

Please, take my advice and don’t waste your time with this one. It is most definitely NOT worth it!

BTW – “Glee” was great. Awesome way to kick off the season.

Fall TV 2010

Summer television has really run its course for me. I just can’t bear to watch another reality show. I will say that I found 1 summer original series worth watching. It was “Drop Dead Diva” on Lifetime. It had a clever premise with a little bit of “Touched by an Angel” and “Ally McBeal” for good measure. Beyond that however I was left with all things Jersey… “Jersey Shore,” “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” and every now and again just a glimpse of “Jerseylicious.” Enough already – I can’t take it.

So finally fall is upon us and I look forward to having some new material to discuss. I’ll welcome back some old favorites like: “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Modern Family,” “Cougar Town,” “The Big Bang Theory,” and “Glee.” And I am also interested in exploring some unchartered territory with shows like “Castle,” “Medium” and “The Good Wife.” I generally steer away from crime shows and dramas, but each of these seem well done and worthy of a look. There are some new shows that seem interesting too. “Better Together” on ABC appears entertaining and “No Ordinary Family” looks like something I could watch with my kids.

Whatever the case, I am just so happy to have some “real” TV to hunker down to as the days get cooler and the nights longer.

16 and Pregnant – Teen Mom?

MTV is certainly known for some of its more questionable programming and while most of it falls into the “trash” category, the curious teen pregnancy and parenthood reality series fall into a category all their own.

My first issue with these shows is that they seem to be on all the time. Every time I flip by MTV I catch a glimpse of these struggling youths who have jumped ahead to a mature state of life, well before their time.

My second issue is that I really don’t think these shows are helping deter what is fast becoming an epidemic in the U.S. The creators claim that exploiting the woes of these children (babies and parents alike) is actually proving to teen viewers that "kids having kids" is not something to pursue. While their lives are far from glamorous, the mere idea of being on television glamorizes the challenges with which these young families are faced.

Sadly, I fear that the illustrious 15 minutes of fame is enough to convince young adults that this may be the very thing that lands them the screen time that they have always dreamed of. What’s worse is that the so – called stars of the starter program, “16 and Pregnant,” have now been promoted to extend their 15 minutes on the new series“Teen Mom.”

It is heartbreaking really to watch these misguided teens and I can only imagine that when the MTV ship sails, their dysfunctional lives will seem even more disjointed than ever before.

My goal to watch “Kathy Griffin – My Life on the D-List” this Tuesday was almost derailed as I realized that the very final episode of “The Hills” was airing simultaneously. There was a brief moment of panic when I realized that whilst on vacation, away from the luxury of my precious DVR, I had no way of ensuring that I could fully watch at least one of my programs at a later time. Not to worry however, I dug deep into the recesses of my TV watching history and recalled that I could toggle back and forth between commercials as I once did back in the old days.

Okay – now with that solved I came to realize that truly I was not missing much between the two shows. While I find Kathy Griffin eternally funny, this show in particular took a bit of a political slant that bored me just a little bit. What did catch my interest was Kathy, oh so sarcastically, quizzing Congressman Barney Frank. It was painful and hilarious at the same time. Kathy’s crude ways and relentless chatter are just even funnier when placed opposite a stoned-faced political figure with apparently little to no sense of humor. None-the-less, Kathy always gets her point across and while I know that her brand of humor is not for everyone, I just get the biggest kick out of her bold and brutal opinions. Her mom on the show is equally as funny. Her complete horror, yet support, of her daughter are charming and her love of wine doesn’t hurt either.

If you are at all interested in getting out of the mundane routine of television watching, Kathy Griffin, is the gal to watch. Her off-color jokes and crazy antics will either leave you busting a gut or grimacing in disgust. Either way – you’ll have a solid reaction and that, my guess, is exactly what Ms. Griffin is after.

Oh, by the way, I did catch bits of the final episode of “The Hills” and was sadly disappointed. I knew the show was over when L.C. left but they certainly didn’t make any lasting impressions with this last show. They thought their ending was so clever; suggesting that after all the speculation the show may very well have been scripted. Duh? That was painfully obvious throughout and became even more so when Kristen took the reins. The after show was even worse, not giving any insight, whatsoever, as to what is actually going on or going to happen in the sad lives of these L.A. losers. Oh well, off tobetter things and glad that I can finally cross that shameful show off my To-Watch list. Honestly, how did it ever get on there in the first place!

"Bethenny Getting Married?"

Wow! Summer certainly has my head spinning. It is hard to believe that so much time has passed since my last post. I barely have time to watch TV! Just kidding – somehow I make the time and as usual Bravo has me hooked. This network is so tuned in to my desire for light-hearted, absurd entertainment; it seems the shows were made just for me.

Now, you would think that the over exposure of certain “Housewives” stars would be a turn-off, yet I have to admit that Bethenny Frankel’s new show, "Bethenny Getting Married?" gets me smiling every time. Despite her obviously calculated efforts to achieve any and all possible press time, I really enjoy her crude and brutally honest approach toward entertainment. It is very possible that I am just easily suckered in by her emotional and pregnant state, but her frequent tears and breakdowns appear to be quite genuine and, truthfully, endearing. During last night’s episode, where she and Jason finally tie the knot, I often found myself grinning in response to both his and her sweet and sometimes sad moments. They are cute together and seemingly very heartfelt.

Bethenny has gotten so much flak for being a media whore and inside peeks to normally private therapy sessions or uncomfortable scenes like last night’s “peeing in a wedding dress” are likely the cause of the backlash. However, I still like the raw/real nature of what Bethenny is doing. I guess when people like Bethenny go in on something, they go all in. I appreciate her no holds barred approach – it’s shocking, funny and sincere all at the same time.

It may not be for everybody, but I am not ashamed to admit – I like it. Go Bethenny!

Next up – “Kathy Griffin, My Life on the D-List.” I find her so funny, it is wrong!

Wipeout

I am so excited for summer for more reasons than one. A big plus about summer, more than the obvious, is that all sorts of new shows surface; most of which are ridiculous but a few are a nice break from the regular routine. Remember when we were stuck with summer reruns?

One summer show that is fun for the whole family is ABC’s “Wipeout.” I love it because my girls love it and the shenanigans are purely hysterical. We get so into it that we can’t control our shouts and groans of sheer horror. It is crazy that regular people are expected to negotiate their way through these outrageous obstacle courses. I do not understand how they are not injured. Who knew the human body could contort itself in such bizarre ways when unexpectedly bounced off of one of the infamous “big balls.”

If the stunts aren’t enough to suck you in, the two announcers are sure to get you laughing. Their dry and funny banter adds to and improves upon the madcap nature of this show and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the sound effects. Not only are they well done, but they take the shock factor of some of the kooky activities to a whole new level.

May Sweeps

I am somewhat excited to clean house, if you will, with regard to my standard shows. I am anxious to put a good list of programs to bed, if not permanently, at least for the summer. To begin with; I couldn't be happier to say goodbye to "Lost." I have previously posted about my ongoing struggle with the plot and now, a week from tomorrow, I can finally forget about it and move on to bigger and better things. Not that I have bothered to watch for weeks, but I am committed to watching the final show just to put closure on the subject

Also, glad to be gone, although just for the summer, is "Brothers and Sisters." I do not know why I continue to torture myself with this show. It is so over dramatic and negative. Could a group of people possibly bicker as much as they all do and still stick together? The whole thing gives me a headache. I simply fall into it because I am still a big fan of "Desperate Housewives." This show has had a lot of bumps in the road, but somehow manages to hang on with some decent story lines. The worst of which, however, was a disturbing turn in last night's finale when Lynette had to give birth to her daughter with only her son's crazy friend to help her through it. It was just far too awkward and slightly gross.

Other shows to bid a fond farewell to: 'The Biggest Loser" - this just seems to have droned on for so long this season, I've simply had enough. "Grey's Anatomy" - not bad this season but the fact that they are going to try to end the season with some kind of shooting rampage cliffhanger seems a little cheap and overdone. Didn't "ER" do basically the same thing back in the day?

Anyway, the list goes on, but suffice to say that I am very ready for summer in more ways than one!

Bravo to Bravo

And a shout out to MTV and FOX too for welcoming back some of my guiltiest pleasures and one hot new show that has drama, musical talent and pure wit all tied up into one pretty little package.

The latter, of course, is referring to "Glee" which has risen to fast fame and provides viewers of so many age levels such vast entertainment that it is hard to believe that it was put on hold for serval months prior to its triumphant return a few weeks ago. If you haven't seen it, it is a great new show that I would consider an absolute must. My favorite character, by far, is Sue Sylvester. Picture Atilla the Hun in a track suit.

Also back from several months away are MTV's, "The Hills" and "The City." These shows are addictingly horrible and while I know I shouldn't watch them, I repeatedly get sucked in. It is being reported that "The Hills" will end after this season so I figure I might as well indulge since I can soon check one more trashy reality show off my list. I am sure "The City" won't be too far behind its predecessor so I might as well hang on there as well. Right?

And finally the ultimate indulgence comes from Bravo TV with the "Real Housewives." I have been reveling in the New York season for several weeks and now, as if to add caramel on top of the hot fudge, Bravo is running the New Jersey season concurrently. I'm like a kid in a candy shop. These ladies represent every well mannered, politically correct woman's alter ego that snarkily speaks her mind where ever and whenever she sees fit. The audacity of every episode of every season is laughable, jaw-dropping and also just a little bit inspiring. Not to say that I would ever actually erupt like these women do, but there are certainly times that the idea of it is nothing short of devilish.

Another favorite returning tonight is "Friday Night Lights." Now I just have to figure out when I'll have time to blog with all of my fun shows back in the picture!

A Good Week

As far as TV goes, this past week was one that I would consider pretty good while at times, bittersweet.

"Ugly Betty" aired its final show and I was thrilled to see that they bid farewell in a tasteful way. Betty's relocation to London and last minute reunion with Daniel provided closure yet offered an opportunity for viewers to envision their own best scenario as to what the character's futures will hold. I have always liked Ugly Betty’s creative and kooky way of telling their unique and fun-loving story and even better was the fact that they ended on a high note before falling down that slippery slope in a desperate attempt to hang on past their prime.

"Life Unexpected" also aired its final show, of its first season however, and unfortunately I don’t think they wrapped up quite as well as "Ugly Betty." It was so contrived and predictable. I had high hopes for this young drama, but throughout the season I’ve found myself rolling my eyes a few too many times. My biggest gripe is with the main character, Cate, who if replaced would likely make this close to a bearable program. Her annoying, almost pathetic, personality has been a complete turn-off for an otherwise interesting premise with decent fellow actors.

Additionally, this past week, "Saturday Night Live" aired a prime time special, "SNL in the 2000s – Time and Again." I am a renewed again SNL fan and completely enjoyed this re-hash of some of the funniest moments of Will Farrell, Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, Kristen Wiig, Kenan Thompson and more. The bits that make me laugh the most are always the ones that the comedians themselves can’t keep from laughing at. It brings me back to the days of Eddie Murphy...Classic comedy at its best.

So overall – a good week. Here's hoping there is more good viewing to come.

Now I have Seen it All

In my many years of being a career television watcher; I feel I have come to the point where nothing surprises me. Well, I stand corrected – I recently watched an E! Television special – Extreme Dr. 90210 and let me tell you, extreme was by no means an understatement. I was truly floored by what I saw.

The show covered several cases including before seen, gender transformations and birth abnormality corrections. There was even a devastating case of a woman seeking to rebuild her nose and lip that were horribly attacked by a ferret when she was 8 months old. These were interesting and tough to watch at times but honestly, nothing compared to the feature on 2 women who were seeking 3D body modification and tongue splitting. It was like nothing I have ever seen. These 3D transdermal implants were so shocking and what is worse is that they were input without any pain reducing medication. One of the women already had a cross embedded in her chest and the other was having these little nubs implanted in her forehead so that she could feign horns or even screw in antennae. The process required her to have what looked like a miniature little spatula under the layers of skin on her forehead. It was the craziest thing I have ever seen. The other woman was having her tongue split. Can you say OUCH! I am not sure if I missed the part where she explained why she wanted that done, but I was left completely stumped - other than the fun fact that she could now balance 2 Smarties candies on either tip of her new lizard-like tongue.

Truly now I can say that nothing ceases to amaze me. I swear if you flip around the tube long enough you are sure to see the nuttiest things. Did you know there is a reality show focused entirely on parking meter attendants? I will be sure to add that to my soon to be “Will Never Watch List.”

Did You Say Celebrity?

Lately, I’ve been sucked into pseudo-celebrity programs like Celebrity Apprentice, Celebrity Fit Club and the ever popular Dancing with the Stars. It would seem to be nothing short of an insult to these personalities to be invited onto one of these contests as if to say, “We know you have nothing better going on, so how about taking any opportunity to put yourself back in the limelight?” The majority of the viewing public either has no idea who these people are or has no respect for them whatsoever. Some of the contestants enjoyed one-time fame, but as is the case with Brett Michaels and Holly Robinson Pete, that time has long since passed. Not to mention what is happening on VH1s, just wrapped, Celebrity Fit Club. I have no idea who half of these people are…Tanisha Thomas, Jay McCaroll – Anyone? Anyone? And the sheer audacity of calling Kevin Federline a celebrity – Please!

The sad reality of these celebrity-like reality shows is that they thrive on past their prime stars who are obviously desperate for any kind of work or publicity. Disappointingly, the viewing audience is left with the same, unimpressive talent, which landed the celebs on shows like these in the first place.

Now Dancing with the Stars does have the dance factor going for it which seems to keep viewers coming back. But again, the celebrity selection leaves much to be desired (Kate Gosselin) and the judge’s panel is just so tiresome. Bruno’s over-drama routine is just completely over done and boring. And don’t get me started on poor Buzz Aldrin. It is just plain uncomfortable to watch on so many levels.

Of course, with the lack of anything better to watch, this is what I find myself tuning into. It could be worse I suppose, I could be stuck watching sports with my husband or SpongeBob with the kids. So, I take what I can get.

Why "The Biggest Loser" Bugs Me.

I have been watching The Biggest Loser for many years now and as much as I’d like to give it up, it remains a show that I go back to. One reason is that there is not much else on on Tuesday nights and another is that my husband is slightly obsessed with the show. He just loves it for some reason and since I, admittedly, hog the television on most occasions I tend to give him this one without much argument.

Despite my regular viewership of the show, there are so many things that drive me absolute insane about it. To begin with, the number of commercials are completely excessive and poorly timed just as an important weigh in is about to be revealed. Okay, I get the anticipation factor but to add insult to injury, every time they return from commercial they repeat at least 30 seconds of what we’ve already seen. It is so redundant and annoying. Never mind Ali's need to calculate the number of elimination votes for each and every person. Newsflash Ali - we can count.

Speaking of commercials, I find it completely off-putting when, in the middle of what you think is an actual conversation between trainer and trainee, suddenly Jillian or Bob bursts into an obvious advertisement for Ziploc. It completely cheapens the moment.

And what about Jillian’s recent advancement to psycho-analyst/preacher/unqualified problem solver? I am all for supporting the contestants emotionally but, honestly, I think she takes it too far with her drama and intensity. Another thing about Jillian (can you tell I am a Bob fan?), is it really necessary for her to perch herself atop of the gym equipment as if to say, “Look at me- I am so fit and tiny, I can sit on top of the treadmill.” Absurd!

Okay – finally. And this is the big one. I cannot stand the fact that none of the contestants ever talk about being hungry. They groan through workouts, complain about other players and argue with their trainers, but they never talk about how absolutely starving they must be. They’ve reduced their calorie intake by the thousands and are working out intensely and yet they say nothing of what must be constant belly grumbling agony. Of all my gripes that has to be the biggest one. It just doesn’t make sense. If this is a reality show, then they need to get real.

"Parenthood"

I am not sure what to make of CBS’s new, Tuesday night, program “Parenthood” quite yet. I can certainly relate to it on many levels, the problem is it seems a little too relatable. I am hearing that a lot of viewers are loving this new show, but to be honest the first few episodes struck me as a bit depressing. I was under the impression that this show was inspired by the Steve Martin movie by the same name. However, the movie, if I recall, offered far more humor.

I consider television an escape; something to entertain whether it be comedy, drama, action or otherwise. I like shows that touch upon reality while simultaneously reaching just far enough beyond it, so as not to hit too close to home.

“Parenthood” is tackling topics that are all too familiar and a harsh reality for many. Things like children with Asperger’s Syndrome, infidelity, teen rebellion, single parenthood and over-zealous parenting have all been covered. All in only 3 episodes.

My issue is that I felt sad when I was watching it. I know many people, some close to me, who are dealing with these very circumstances and I guess it saddened me to see it all played out, so painstakingly, on television.

The actors and actresses are doing a good job, so good that I was left wishing they’d lighten up some. Maybe, had the writers phased in some of the heavy topics, over time, it may have been less overwhelming in terms of upfront drama and content overload. The show is good, just a lot to take in all at once.

These are just my initial impressions. As with any new show, it usually takes 4-6 episodes to gain solid footing. So we’ll see where this one goes. What do you think?

Dog Days

I’ll tell you, the best way to deter a child from wanting a dog is to put them in charge of one for a week.

Let me start by saying that I LOVE dogs. I had one all of my life until I met my darling husband who is allergic to most breeds and openly not a dog lover.

As recently as a couple of years ago I still pined for a pet. However, in time, I have realized that my husband’s lack of desire has rubbed off on me. As sweet as they can be, they really are a lot of work and as much as my daughters insist they’d take care of one, I know that novelty would wear off in about a minute. Well, maybe a week, as our most recent dog-sitting assignment proved.

About twice a year we dog-sit for my Dad’s adorable shitzu-poodle mix named Buddy (that's the little guy in the photo). Let me tell you, as much as I love him, Buddy boy is a lot of work. He is finicky, fresh, demanding, quirky and, literally, takes 20 minutes to sniff out a good place to poop. Just the other night, I was going to bed and turned out the light before heading upstairs. The darn dog stayed at the bottom of the stairs until I put the light on for him – so spoiled. Never mind that he barks whenever I sit down to watch television. Now that’s a big no-no. TV time is quiet time in my house!

For this most recent visit, my 9 year old stepped up to the plate and decided to take 100% care of Buddy to prove that she could do it. To her credit she has done a great job and hasn’t given up, but after 4 out of the 8 days, she announced that indeed she does not want a dog. “It is just too much,” she said.

Finally, somebody gets it. She actually understood where I was coming from and realized that I wasn’t discouraging her from getting a dog just to make her life miserable. I took great satisfaction in that moment.

So now, at least one of my daughters is off the doggie train. Now onto my 7 year old who not only wants a dog, but also a hamster – yikes! I guess I know who’ll be in charge of Buddy on his next visit.

Real Housewives…

Some might say that Bravo TVs “Real Housewives of…” series is hardly real, but despite the far-fetched scenarios and unusually big personalities, I have taken a liking to the show whether it takes place in the sunny OC of California or close to home in NYC. Interestingly, I detested the first seasons of both Atlanta and New York, yet now I have warmed up to all of the locales including the newest of New Jersey. It’s yet another example of my “train wreck” attraction. I just can’t look away.

Last week, the OC Housewives wrapped up their season and I must say it was a doozy. Overall, this original cast of housewives has gotten a bit stale and over-exposed but the heated situation that broke out between Tamra and her husband Simon was downright awkward. In all honesty, I felt slightly uncomfortable watching as if I were spying on someone’s personal business. The tension between the two seemed quite genuine and did not strike me as “put on” for the cameras as most of the show's drama seems to be. Well, maybe not so much Tamra’s crying and whimpering with no discernable real tears, but the rage that appeared to be boiling up in Simon was palpable.

The season ended, as it always does, with a brief breakdown of the latest news on each gal. Tamra’s bit revealed that Simon had filed for divorce. Wednesday, they will air the reunion show which I will be sure to tune into to see if anything has since turned around. The sad truth about this couple’s demise is that they probably would have been perfectly fine had they never been introduced to the reckless world of reality television.

Well, onto the NYC ladies who will undoubtedly do whatever it takes to one-up the OC. At this point, nothing surprises me.

Vitamins – What’s the Deal?

Recently, I had the urge/obsession to boost my energy level. I had heard from several, unprofessional, sources that I should up my Vitamin D and B intake – mistake #1. Generally speaking, I don’t jump into these types of things without great consideration, but for some reason I just went ahead and started a new regimen with little background research – mistake #2. What little investigation I did do suggested I should consult my physician prior to starting a new vitamin routine. I didn’t do that; it’s vitamins for heaven’s sake! – mistake #3.

So here is what happened, after about a week and a half on the new D and Bs, I can honestly say that I felt like junk. I was considerably more lethargic, so bloated and a bit dizzy. I thought this so entirely odd. I was not taking inordinately high doses and the vitamins were taken with food as directed. Why was this seemingly simple change having such a strange impact? Many I mentioned my situation to suggested that it was purely coincidence; others thought I might be particularly sensitive; others said I didn’t need them in the first place so my body was responding to the unnecessary influx.

The truth is I am not 100% sure why these little additives had such an adverse effect. The old adage, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” seems to apply here. I didn’t feel all that bad before taking the extra D and B complex. I am a healthy eater and for the most part I feel good. I should have left well enough alone.

It is easy to get lured into new, but unnecessary, changes with the hope of feeling like a “new woman,” but if the woman you already are is doing pretty well then it may be best to stick with what works.

Some Things Really Should be Kept Secret – Secrets of Aspen VH1

In an earlier post, I remarked on MTV’s “Jersey Shore” and how VH1 would attempt to “take it up a notch” featuring an elite Aspen crowd in “Secrets of Aspen.” Well, up really wasn’t the direction this show went in. It got so down and dirty at points that half the cast wound up covered in chocolate cake -at an elegant cocktail party, nonetheless.

I should have known it wasn’t something I should watch when its air time was pushed to 11:00pm. However, despite the past-my-bedtime timeslot, I was sucked in. I know it is wrong, but the same thing happened when I started watching “Rock of Love.” Oh God, did I just admit that out loud?

There is just something about these shows that I can’t resist. They are so trashy and ridiculous that I find them funny. Despite the fact that the “Secrets of Aspen” ladies were supposed to be of an upscale crowd, their catfights, love triangles and desperate measures for attention were nothing short of embarrassing. I have watched many a reality show in my time and it never ceases to amaze me what “regular” people will do to get their 15 minutes of fame. These women were airing their dirty laundry all over the place. Aspen is going to have to invest in some serious, industrial-sized washing machines to clean up the mess that they left behind.

According to several online news reports, residents of Aspen are fuming that the show was allowed into their beautiful community and rightfully so. While celebrity and Hollywood may seem exciting from one’s comfy spot on the couch, having them in your backyard does not seem at all desirable.

It is unclear if ‘Secrets of Aspen” will return for another run. I suppose there are always skeletons in one’s closet that are clamoring to be revealed and if this first round was any indication, I have no doubt the cast would jump on the chance to expose/exploit themselves yet again.

Monday on Oprah!

Tiger Woods

Ugh! I am so disgusted by this whole Tiger Woods debacle. What a complete train wreck. His apology today certainly did not help matters. It was so rehearsed and monotone. At one point I think he was actually promoting his business with his father and the desire to continue its growth.

I don’t want to give this topic any more time than it deserves (which honestly should be none), but if today was an effort to redeem himself, he has a long way to go. His attempt to cover all of his bases through his apology came off as completely insensitive to the people that matter. He talked about everything from his Buddhist faith to performance enhancing drugs – who cares! His focus should be 100% on his family and absolutely no one else including fans, media or the PGA. The fact that we are going to have to hear about this for months to come makes me sick. The whole thing is just too much, as was his speech.

"Lost" - The Final Season - Thank God!

I have never been so happy that a show is ending yet still so hooked on it. I have been struggling with “Lost” for a long time but at this point I am so anxious to figure the whole thing out that I just can’t let it go.

For those who don’t know me, I am a complete TV Junkie. Some people turn to alcohol or drugs I, on the other hand, turn to television. I always have and always will. It is my unconditional vice. I am not ashamed – it’s who I am at the core.

Anyway, back to “Lost” – this show has crossed over from perplexing to just plain annoying. I know that this is not news, it has been all over the place for several seasons but now, just as it is about to end, I’ve had enough. First of all, there is no possible way that all of the unanswered questions could ever be resolved by the time of the finale. Remember Walt, for example - Are they ever going to close the loop on the odd curse or negative energy that he carried around with him? Is he going to miraculously reappear like Claire?

And what about the “smoke monster?” Really - A smoke monster? That always struck me as ridiculous and now that it has such a prominent role couldn’t they have come up with something a little less cartoon-like?

Honestly, it is just exhausting and downright disappointing. There are so many gripes at this point, they would be impossible to list. Please, let it just end so that I may finally be done with it.

Stepping Out-Lizzie Borden and the Axes

Life in suburbia can seem much like being in a bubble. Even though the fun and excitement of Boston is just 20 minutes away, it is rare that I venture outside of my comfort zone. I know that I am missing out on a lot of great things, but let’s face facts; it is hard to break out.

There is nothing like a great event, however, to light a fire under my butt. Just recently I was invited by a friend to attend a V66 Reunion Show at the House of Blues in Boston. V66 was a Boston video station that featured local bands and talent. It was popular right around the time that MTV and VH1 were hitting the scene. Turns out my friend, Heather, was a lead vocalist for one of V66’s hot bands called Lizzie Borden and the Axes. I, along with 2 friends, decided to break out of our usual routines and head into the city to check out the action.

It was an amazing night. The House of Blues was a great venue to move around and reminisce to the sounds of great music from our past. By the time Lizzie Borden and the Axes took the stage it was 11:30 and we didn’t even realize how late it had gotten. The performance was incredible. We could have rocked on ‘til morning. Heather’s voice was beyond excellent and the show itself was edgy, entertaining and entirely impressive. I don’t know what was more cool, the fact that I am friendly with this rock star on stage, or the fact that I can still enjoy a concert like I did in my twenties. Either way, it certainly made me want to do it again soon.

So to Heather, I say Thank You for a great experience and I look forward to a revival of Lizzie Borden and the Axes. I also look forward to stepping outside of my comfort zone more often. The few days it takes to recover are well worth the memories and great times.

Listen to Your Body

It seems now more than ever, the old adage to “listen to one’s body” is speaking directly to me. This past year I turned 40 and the reality is I am not the same bundle of energy I once was. Don’t get me wrong, I am in good health. I run around doing a million errands, thousands of loads of laundry and keep up with my kids with the best of them, but there are days that I just hit the wall. Of course, the thing that seems to be the first cut from the list of things to do is exercise. Some days I know if I just push myself I will actually feel better once I am through. Then there are those days when the best thing I can do is rest – listen to my tired old body – and just rest.

Just the other day I chose this path and I am far better for it today. The workout that I skipped 2 days ago afforded me such a great workout today that I feel inspired.

The guilt that generally accompanies the workout bail out is so nagging yet so unnecessary. I now realize that there was clearly a reason that I had to stop the treadmill 15 minutes into my run only to abandon the mission all together. Whether I was getting run down or sick or just dehydrated, there was no way that run would have been productive. I am glad I skipped it and would do it again. Not as an excuse, but a means to an end. A great workout 2 days later is more worthwhile than 1 or even 2 lousy workouts in the first place.

Finally on Facebook

Okay, I did it. I finally got on Facebook. I don’t know why it is that I am so resistant to modern technology. Truly, I think it is a personality trait. Either you are into it or not. I guess I fall pretty deep into the”not” category since I am not only so late in the game with Facebook, but I don’t text or twitter either. I don’t even watch HD TV channels – Really, I just don’t see the difference!

So now that I am on Facebook, quite honestly I am not sure what to do with myself. It took me about 3 weeks to upload some FB friendly photos. That’s another technological thing I hate to do – upload pictures! I avoid it at all costs. Nonetheless, I am making progress. I’ve made some comments on people’s walls and I’ve signed up to be a fan of a few groups that I like. What I haven’t done is scout out people from my past who I might be interested to learn about. Truth be told, I really am not that interested and I am completely paranoid about sharing my own life with people that I am not connected to in a live, day to day, fashion. I know – I can set security blocks to ensure my privacy, but since I am so clueless about what I am doing in the first place, I don’t trust that I have set those blocks properly.

The reality is, like with any new thing, it is going to take time to get comfortable with this. My New Year’s resolution for 2010 was to “get with the times” and I am determined to make this happen. I don’t want to be out of the loop, it just comes so unnaturally to me that it is a bit hard to follow through.

So far my Facebook experience has been pretty good. I suspect that in time I will be a regular visitor. For now, I check it about once a week and hopefully that will be enough to stay tuned in. I figure that once my kids get old enough to be doing this stuff themselves, I’d better be up to speed so I can keep tabs on them.

Jersey Shore

There has been a lot of talk about “Jersey Shore” on MTV and the outrage felt by the Italian community and quite frankly, I don’t get it. I’m half Italian and I am not offended by this show. I do not look, talk or act like any of these buffoons so why should I take their behavior and willingness to exploit themselves personally? Honestly, I think the show is kind of funny.

They are a group of completely tacky and absurd individuals who have been packed in a house on the New Jersey Shore in order to showcase their, let’s just say, not so hidden talents. It is obviously a train wreck and like any normal human being, I stop to take a glance. I am not saying I am proud of it, but if these people are willing to completely embarrass themselves on national television then who am I to balk. I mean, one guy actually refers to himself as “The Situation.” I am not sure what that even means, but oddly I do find it funny.

The most recent scandal centered on the punch heard round the world when female cast member, Snookie, took a hit from some random guy at a bar. It was surprisingly unsettling to watch, but after the 500^th time it was flashed on miscellaneous weekly entertainment shows, I got over the initial shock. It is only one of, what is sure to be, many outrageous moments that the media will play, replay and play yet again. It is all just one repetitive nightmare that is impossible to forget.

But wait, this may take your mind off of it. VH1 has now decided to set off the cheesy world of high hair and hard core accents with an upscale version of what is bound to be exactly the same level of poor quality entertainment. Enter – “Secrets of Aspen.” This show may be about affluent, cougar-types in one of America’s richest communities, but let’s face facts it is no better than “Jersey Shore.” Just a bunch of pathetic wannabes trying to get their 15 minutes of fame on one of the many lame reality shows that have sadly taken over modern television. I will give “Secrets of Aspen” a few more weeks before I attack it head on. For now, take pleasure in “Jersey Shore,” and its youthful misadventures. At least there is hope that this cast will outgrow their current state of being. I don’t think we’ll have the same luck with the 40 somethings of Aspen.

Cooper Anderson

Do you like Anderson Cooper ? I just love this guy. There is something about his sophisticated, polished exterior combined with his playful yet knowledgeable persona that is so easy to watch. Now don’t get me wrong, I haven’t put AC 360 on my DVR or anything, but Anderson’s recent stint on Regis and Kelly solidifies him in my mind as a fun-loving celebrity type trapped in an intellectual’s body.

Despite the common belief that he is gay, Anderson's chemistry with Kelly Ripa makes me wonder if they are really in love. I know – Kelly is married and devoted to Mark Consuelos, but she and Anderson are so flirty and seemingly so connected, it really makes me wonder. Whatever the case, I love watching them together. Regis, look out! Realistically, with his journalistic and news background, Anderson is well overqualified for a regular spot next to Kelly Ripa on a morning talking show, but if he actually landed the job long term, I would certainly watch.

Speaking of background, I also love that Anderson's mother is none other than fashion extraordinaire, Gloria Vanderbilt. How crazy is that? It’s cool that despite the silver spoon in his mouth he’s gone on to have a successful and challenging career covering worldly and intense topics. I like that kind of self motivation and combined with Anderson’s boyish sense of humor, he’s purely entertaining.

Overall, I just think Anderson Cooper is an interesting character and look forward to following his career, both as a CNN reporter and talk show sidekick. You know – I might just put AC 360 on my DVR after all.

Holiday Hoopla

Here we go! The push to Christmas is in full swing. How is it that so much can happen in such a short span of time? I know I could plan ahead and do some shopping in advance or I could use one of those summer photos of the girls for the annual Christmas card, but noooo – it all has to get done in a matter of a few short weeks while I drive myself, and pretty much everyone else around me, completely nuts. Not to mention all of the holiday gatherings, parties and festivities? I could certainly decline one here or there, but what fun is that? So, off I go to every get together, pocketbook party and open house to find myself faced with countless cocktails, munchies and treats. Ideally, if I so choose to indulge in every possible social opportunity, at the very least I should exhibit a little self control. There is no doubt that I could politely pass up the social cocktails or appealing appetizers that I so enjoy, right? Most definitely, the desserts must be skipped on occasion, wouldn’t you agree? Here’s the thing, none of this is ever going to happen so rather than guilt my way through the holidays while my head spins and my waistline grows I have resolved to simply enjoy the good times and make the most of it. There will always be a time that I can undo all the bad that I’ve done so here, in the moment, I resolve to embrace the holiday hoopla and all that comes with it. ‘Tis the Season! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Snuggie Commercial

You may have already seen this, but I just saw this version of the Snuggie commercial for the first time and had to comment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_8oNO8WCIg. I know these commercials have already been lambasted left and right, but I have to put my 2 cents in. Who thinks up this stuff? To begin with, the entire concept of the Snuggie befuddles me. I mean, is it really so hard to put a blanket over you. Also, the makers of the Snuggie apparently aren't up to speed with this crazy new thing called a robe. Really, what's the difference? A robe even has a handy belt with which you can secure it to your body. Fancy, huh!? Okay, enough about the product itself and onto the commercial. How embarrassing! How do these poor commercial actors and actresses live with themselves after viewing this abomination? The whole thing is so dopey, which may very well be the intent, but that doesn't make it any less wrong. I realize that everyone needs to make a buck, but what about taking pride in one's work? Let's take the Snuggie wearing couple in this salesy skit. It is bad enough they are crammed onto a little couch with these oversized wraps, but the dancing in the kitchen - Really? Come on, what do they take us for? And about the gentlemen adorning the Snuggie...I'm not buying it and I am certainly not buying the Snuggie either. I will however continue to watch their commercials, because while I gaze at my television, agape in disbelief, I cannot deny the absurd humor or the desire to tear it apart like so many others out there.

Clean Heat

Ahhhhh! All this H1N1 talk is driving me mad. Flu shot - no flu shot?? It's all freaking me out.

Okay, so I take matters into my own hands and furiously begin cleaning my house. Good, right? Well maybe; until I get a little too close to my heating registers and realize that there could possibly be a whole other life form living in there. To be honest, I'm a bit of an ignorant homeowner and the thought of entirely dismantling my heating vents in order to thoroughly clean them just never occurred to me. Then I discovered what lies beneath my daughter's registers and to my complete and total horror I realize that the air quality in my home must be of the lowest possible grade.

When I took these things apart I found fully wrapped Twizzler candies, money, barrettes, pens and pencils. You name it, it was in there. Not to mention the layers of dust. It was an outrage, never mind an embarrassment. I mean really - how gross!

Here's the thing - I now realize that the cleaning of these registers alone is something that should be done annually if not more. Yet, despite having just accomplished this very task on every single one of these dust traps, I decided to call in professionals to take it to the next level. If the accessible dust was this bad, I could only imagine what must be inside my entire HVAC system polluting the air we breathe.

Generally, I am not a germaphobe or clean-freak but when I realized that our air quality must really have been compromised due to this lapse in awareness, I thought it was worth the call to a specialist. Turns out residential HVAC systems should be professionally cleaned every 5 years. In retrospect it all makes sense, but sadly I was not previously in the know. Really, shouldn't my husband be taking care of things of this nature?

Rest assured, now that I am privy to this knowledge, I will be sure to stay on top of this. In these times of pandemic panic, I welcome any kind of drug-free option to help prevent illness. Breathing clean air seems to be an easy and obvious step in the right direction.

Is it wrong that I love Miley Cyrus's new hit, "Party in the U.S.A.?" The truth is, it's a catchy song with cute lyrics and a good beat. The problem is, I really don't want to be one of those moms who embarrass her children by rocking out to music that is, shall we say, not age appropriate. I guess I can just try to keep it cool when the song comes on and the kids go wild, but inside I am just jumping out of my skin wishing that I could sing along at the top of my lungs like my girls.

The fear of looking completely uncool is, of course, just one concern of many when it comes to supporting the latest Disney music gone mainstream. There is also the worry that I somehow think the ridiculously short shorts and oddly suggestive gyrations are okay for a star that has gone, so quickly, from squeaky clean to uncomfortably mature. I know, I know - Britney's done it and Christina too, but it is hard to explain the sudden changes in these pop stars to young girls who aspire to sing like them and move like them too. There is nothing more disturbing than watching young girls attempt to mimic the moves of the latest teen diva and end up looking more like they are in a hula-hoop contest gone bad.

It's every parent's battle, but the fine line between mutual enthusiasm and concerned disapproval is just so easily blurred. I'll just keep my fingers crossed that Miley's recent stage performance with a stripper pole will be her last prop mis-adventure. Come on Billy-Ray! - how could you let that one slip by you?

Hot, Hot, Hot

Never underestimate the benefit of a good sweat.

I have been hooked on Bikram "Hot" yoga at Bikram Yoga Merrimack Valley in North Andover for some time now. Even though the sequence of postures never change, I've yet to get bored. The challenge persists from class to class as I struggle to maintain balance or achieve flexibility that is so quickly lost from one day to the next.

The ultimate thrill of this yoga is the pure cleansing feeling that is experienced post-practice. While I don't normally perspire a great deal, I can not get over the sweat that is produced in this 1 1/2 hour time frame. I feel that with each class my body is purged of the countless toxins with which I pollute it. Whether it's the weekend wine supply or the absurd number of Halloween candies that I consumed (sorry kids!), Bikram seems to simply wash it away.

I never thought yoga was for me and now I am hooked. I love having an outlet that I look forward to rather than dread like the treadmill. Knowing what great things it is doing for my mind, body and spirit makes it even more satisfying.

All I have to say is "Namaste."
